Zuvor hatten israelische Medien und die Holocaust-Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem am Samstagabend Wiesels Tod gemeldet….

Mahnende Stimme für eine bessere Welt
Seine Eltern liegen auf keinem Friedhof. Das Grab seines Vaters sei „irgendwo dort oben im Himmel“, sagte Elie Wiesel, als er vor sieben Jahren mit dem amerikanischen Präsidenten Obama das ehemalige Konzentrationslager in Buchenwald besuchte. In ihrer Baracke konnte sein Vater Schlomo krank und entkräftet das Bett über ihm nicht mehr verlassen. „Er rief nach mir, und ich hatte zu viel Angst, um mich zu bewegen. Dann starb er. Ich war da, als er starb, aber ich war eben nicht da“, erinnerte sich Elie Wiesel in Buchenwald. Er war 17 Jahre alt, als die Amerikaner wenige Wochen später im April 1945 das Lager befreiten. Seine Mutter Sara und seine jüngste Schwester Zipora waren schon in Auschwitz ermordet worden….

Tausende waren in der Nacht auf Sonntag auf den Strassen, um mit der Familie die Nacht nach dem abendlichen Fastenbrechen während des Ramadan zu geniessen. Ende Mai erklärte Israels neuer Verteidigungsminister Avigdor Liebermann vor dem Generalstab: „Kommt es zur Kollision der Werte, werden die Vollständigkeit des Volkes und die des Landes gegeneinander ausgespielt, so ist die Einheit im Volk wichtiger als die Einheit des Landes Israel.“ Grundsätzlich ist dies eine linksorientierte Auffassung. Denn Menschenleben sind wichtiger als das Land, daher sind Israels Linke für territoriale Kompromisse….

Die Schriftstellerin Sharon Dodua Otoo erhielt in Klagenfurt den mit 25 000 Euro dotierten Ingeborg-Bachmann-Preis für den Text „Herr Gröttrup setzt sich hin“. Die 1972 geborene Britin lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. „Gewöhnlicherweise beschreibe ich mich als schwarze britische Mutter, Aktivistin, Autorin und Herausgeberin“, so die im deutschsprachigen Literaturbetrieb eher wenig bekannte Autorin über sich selbst. Sie ist Herausgeberin der englischsprachigen Buchreihe „Witnessed“. Im Jahr 2012 erschien ihre erste Novelle im Verlag edition assemblage. Ihre jüngste Novelle „Synchronicity“ wurde 2014 veröffentlicht. Zudem erschienen bereits mehrere Kurzgeschichten aus ihrer Feder….

Antisemitische Handschrift
Vor vier Jahren wurden sie in Köln-Sülz eingeweiht: Die beiden Kölner Gedenksteine für den unweit des Sülzgürtels wohnenden jüdischen Schriftsteller und Journalisten Peter Finkelgruen und dessen 1942 in Theresienstadt ermordeten Großvater Martin Finkelgrün. Nun, Ende Juni, wurde die auf einem der beiden Steine angebrachte Gedenkplakette nachts mit weißer Farbe übersprüht. Die Inschrift ist nicht mehr lesbar. Ein aufmerksamer Nachbar informierte über die Schändung. Peter Finkelgruen befand sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht in Köln, wurde aber inzwischen informiert….

Likud MKs, activists push for Shalom’s return to cabinet
A group of Likud activists began an effort over the weekend to return former minister Silvan Shalom to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet following Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit’s decision late Thursday to close the investigation into allegations that Shalom had committed sex crimes. In December 2015, as many as 11 women allegedly accused Shalom of sex crimes, leading to his resignation as interior minister, from the Knesset, and from politics. Mandelblit said he was closing the probe after the head of police intelligence told him that they either could not locate the complainants, the complainants denied the allegations, or they refused to come forward….

You have no place in Palestine.” The video depicts terrorists sneaking under the security fence toward the town of Otniel, where Glick lives and where several of the recent months’ terrorist attacks took place, including Friday’s shooting that killed a father and severely wounded a mother in front of their children. Ethiopian demonstrators arrested after protesting ‚racist Israeli authorities‘
A number of Ethiopian activists were placed under arrest Sunday evening in what police said was a demonstration that had „disrupted the public order“ following a protest held in Tel Aviv. Authorities detained nearly a dozen demonstrators after they began blocking the entrance to the South Ayalon Highway, preventing the flow of traffic to vehicles, according to a statement released by police. „During the event several protestors chose to ignore the orders given by officers and began to disrupt the public order and block roads.“….

Israel has approved plans for the construction of 600 new housing units for Arabs in Givat Hamatos in East Jerusalem, over a month after a court rejected the state’s claims that the construction plan could not go forward due to a secret decision by senior policymakers. At the same time, plans for the construction of 800 new housing units for Jews in East Jerusalem and in Ma’aleh Adumim have also been pushed forward by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
