Brave new musical worlds

An innovative high-school program supported by the city and spearheaded by a dedicated young musician named Aline Gabay has struck a chord with Bat Yam schoolchildren.

There wasn't a single free parking spot near Bat Yam's cultural center one evening a few weeks ago. The problem was caused by hundreds of excited young people and grown-ups who had turned up at the center to attend the annual concert put on by students in the Ramot High School music program.
One group of young musicians after another went up on stage and performed, among them two small girls choirs, conducted by teacher Yuval Weinberg. It was hard for anyone who heard these performers sing their repertoire of classical works, spirituals, folk songs from Latin America and Bulgaria, and traditional Jewish melodies, to believe these were students who never took professional singing lessons….
