Historical reenactments reached Israel last month, with hundreds of people recreating the celebrations following the UN partition declaration. But some say they are is little chance of the craft catching on here.
One day while visiting the Central Zionist Archives in Jerusalem, Yaakov Hagoel came across an "amazing photograph" taken in a Jerusalem courtyard. "Across from one building's facade, dozens of people were applauding," he said. "Their heads were turned upward, toward a long balcony that was filled with leaders of the Jewish Yishuv: Golda Meyerson [soon to be Meir], David Ben-Gurion, and the two chief rabbis."
Hagoel, who heads the World Zionist Organizations' department for activities in Israel and countering anti-Semitism, felt a chill of delight ripple down his spine as he gazed at this preserved image of hundreds of persons crying out in joy, and celebrating….
