Mittlerer Osten:

Tennismeisterin Cathrin Shalev in Israel

Kommentar:

‘US FINALLY GETTING IT RIGHT ON IRAN’

The Trump administration’s strong response to Tehran’s missile test and other provocations related to the nuclear deal over the past week is finally sending the right deterrent message to Iran, two Israeli experts on Iran told The Jerusalem Post. “The Trump administration responded that this [Iran’s actions] is unacceptable. We will respond. US National Security Adviser Michael Flynn put Iran on notice and then there were sanctions. This is exactly what the US should have been doing from Iran’s first provocation,” Emily Landau, INSS head of the Arms Control and Regional Security Program said on Sunday….

FAR RIGHT PARTY SAYS SIPHONING BAYIT YEHUDI MEMBERS

The far-right Yahad Party that fell just short of making the last Knesset has seen a major rise in activists joining and volunteering with the party following Bayit Yehudi chairman Naftali Bennett’s support for last week’s Amona evacuation, Yahad leaders said on Sunday. The Amona evacuation was the first time that Bennett actively supported removing Jews from their homes after promising when he entered politics that he would oppose such moves. He blamed the evacuation on the High Court, which demanded it for legal reasons. But Yahad heads said right-wingers would not give Bennett a second chance….

Frauen und der Jihad:

THE MOTIVATION OF FEMALE SUICIDE BOMBERS

Female suicide bombers were relatively unknown till the second intifada that began in September 2000. Dr. Mordechai Kedar, a senior lecturer in the department of Arabic at Bar-Ilan University, said Sunday that he had been surprised to discover that the perpetrator of an explosion in the bus in which he was traveling was a woman. Fortunately, he suffered only slight injuries and was able to take care of them himself. This was the first time that a woman had been involved in a suicide attack, he said. Casting his mind back after the incident, he remembered having seen her wearing a blue velvet dress – a garment worn only at weddings. “She was dressed for a wedding with shaheeds [‘martyrs”] in heaven.”….

Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court has granted the same right to the country’s Christian Copt civil servants to take a one-month’s paid leave from work to visit Jerusalem that Egyptian Muslim civil servants get to take the pilgrimage to Mecca, the Egypt Independent news website reported Sunday. Israeli spooks step out of the shadows in battle for cyber edge

It was easy to miss amid the noise and bustle at the Cybertech 2017 exhibition in Tel Aviv last week — a desk decked with a blue cloth and a scattering of brochures and comic books, among them Marvel Comics’ Doctor Spectrum. Perhaps the not-so-subtle hint should have been the Israeli flag on display and the blue and white national symbols printed on the panel behind, portraying a menorah circled by the Hebrew words: “Where there is no guidance, a nation falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety”….

Dutch Jewish wedding film from 1939 shines light on doomed community

The Jews of Friesland, a region in the northern Netherlands, are not known for stories with happy endings. During the Holocaust, Friesland’s vibrant Jewish community was forever obliterated, including its endemic customs and distinct Yiddish dialect. It is one of the starkest examples of how the Holocaust decimated and irreparably changed Dutch Jewry. That’s why the recent surfacing of a unique film from 1939 showing the wedding of a Frisian Jewish couple who escaped the genocide is generating remarkable reactions from local media and Dutch state historians here over the past week….
