'Advanced' workbooks? Why should first-graders know how to read and write?
Ah, the same old traffic jams, I smiled to myself on Sunday morning as I drove my kids to their first day of school. Because of the Id al-Fitr holiday, the Muslim kids hadn't started school on September 1. I wondered if all those education reporters and news presenters who reported the big story of the school year opening on time even had any idea that a good portion of the country's kids hadn't begun the year with everybody else. Did they count my son when they reported on the news about the number of children who "started first grade today"?
I put on the Edith Piaf CD that the kids like to create a festive atmosphere and thought about how happy I was to be sitting here again, like everyone. Heading out in the morning with the kids and their backpacks and stuck in traffic, like everyone. There's something comforting about all those parents being in the same situation as you. You can see looks of solidarity from other drivers, an acknowledgment of your common fate….
