Mea Shearim residents prepare for ritual ahead of Yom Kippur in which people use chickens while reciting confessions of sins.
Haredim (ultra-Orthodox) in Jerusalem were busy preparing chickens to perform the ritual ahead of Yom Kippur in Jerusalem's Mea Shearim neighborhood.
Kapparot is a custom in which people wave a chicken over their head while reciting confessions of sins. They then slaughter the animal in accordance with regular kashrut protocols and donate the bird to the poor.
As with many traditions, kapparot emerged in the early medieval period as a folk custom that scholars only later attempted to understand….
