Housing construction is going south – literally

Not long ago Ashkelon was a target for rocket attacks; now it and other nearby cities have become a target for investors and people seeking reasonably priced homes.

The central region's crowded and pricey real estate scene is pushing new construction further away, toward municipalities with large swathes of available land where relatively affordable housing can still be found.
Housing starts are an indication of the new trend: While Jerusalem, Rishon Letzion, Tel Aviv, Petah Tikva and Netanya – in that order – led the list in the first quarter of 2008, Ashkelon and Yavneh grabbed the top two spots in the first quarter of 2011, followed by Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Petah Tikva. A closer look shows many localities on the new construction map which weren't there before, mostly to the south of Tel Aviv….
