Islamist, leftist students clash in Tunisia over right to wear the veil

Manouba University, outside the capital Tunis, has witnessed many demonstrations by hardline Islamist students, who want university to allow women to wear the veil during classes and exams.

Religious and leftist students fought running battles at a Tunisian university Wednesday in the latest incident involving rising religious sentiment in the North African country.
Competing demonstrations in the morning by hundreds of conservative students of the Muslim Salafi stream, and leftist members of the national students' union erupted into violence when the former tore down the national flag flying at the university entrance….
