The Knesset’s former journalists bash libel bill

Coalition, opposition MKs who reported for TV, radio and print say new measure would undermine freedom of press.

The many former journalists now serving as members of Knesset almost unanimously panned the libel bill that was brought its first reading on Monday.
The bill, proposed by MKs Yariv Levin (Likud) and Meir Sheetrit (Kadima), would raise the penalty for libel from NIS 50,000 to 300,000, without proof of damages. The penalty could jump to NIS 1.5 million if the media outlet refuses to publish an apology. Five MKs from the opposition and the coalition told The Jerusalem Post that should the initiative pass, it would prevent the press from performing its democratic role….
