Attorney Efrat Barzilai has finished her term in the State Prosecutor's Office, which means it is losing one of the people who most deeply influenced enforcement of criminal statutes in Israel in recent years.
Efrat Barzilai has apparently chalked up more hours in the Supreme Court than any other lawyer in the criminal field at the State Prosecutor's Office. During her more than 25 years of professional life – the last eight as head of the criminal division in that office, Israel's most important and sensitive criminal cases landed on Barzilai desk.
Barzilai was a member of the team that prosecuted former government minister Aryeh Deri, and it was she who conducted the cross-examination of his wife, Yaffa Deri, in the courtroom. She handled the successful appeal for false statements against Communications Minister Rafael Pinhasi of Shas and led the state's successful appeal against the acquittal of Discount Investment Corporation CEO Dov Tadmor in the DIC-Iscar case. She also spearheaded the proceedings against Gilad Sharon with the aim of obtaining evidence kept at the Sharon family's Sycamore Ranch, in the context of the investigations against his father, then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Furthermore, Barzilai participated in formulating the prosecution's stance in the case against former Tax Authority head Jackie Matza, and recently took part in consultations prior to the decision to file an indictment (still pending) against Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman….
